可仕哉是非共に御目付中江可申上儀かと御尋有之候に付
何とそ筋之立候御意之趣も御座候は御目付中江申上
候義延引仕罷帰候様に申付候何分にも采女正様御書
拝見仕候上に而御請可申上旨申達候処左候は拝見仕候様にとの
義に而御書被相渡候に付彦右衛門両人拝見仕候処御仕置
之義に而筋之立候御意之趣は相見へ不申候へ共其段は
上之御仕置之筋采女正様江可被仰聞様も無之たとひ
御承知之義に而も難被仰聞儀に而 殿様日比 上を
御大切に被思召御勤仕之義に而いか様に被 仰付候迚も毛

(赤穂の者共が納得することを)なすべきでしょうか。是非とも御目付中へ申し上げる儀かと御尋ねがあったので、何とか筋の立つ御意向の趣旨もございましたら、御目付中へ申し上げる儀を延引いたし、罷り帰るよう申し付けます。何分にも采女正様の御書を拝見いたした上で御請けを申し上げる旨を申し達したところ、それでは拝見するようにとのことで御書を相渡されたので、彦右衛門と両人で拝見いたしたところ、御仕置の儀で筋の立つ御意向の趣旨は相見えませんでしたが、その段は上の御仕置の筋を采女正様へ仰せ聞かされるようなこともなく、たとえ御承知の儀であっても仰せ聞かされ難い儀であって、殿様は日頃上を御大切に思し召され御勤仕の儀であり、いかように仰せ付けられても毛
英語訳
Should [the Akō retainers' satisfaction] be accomplished? When asked whether this matter should definitely be reported to the metsuke (magistrates), [they replied that] if there were any reasonable intentions behind this matter, they would postpone reporting to the metsuke and return home. In any case, they conveyed that they would give their acceptance only after viewing Lord Uneme-no-kami's letter. When told to view it, the letter was handed over, so Hikouemon and both men examined it. Although no reasonable intentions regarding the punishment were evident, this matter was such that the higher authorities' punishment decisions would not be conveyed to Lord Uneme-no-kami, and even if he were aware, it would be difficult to inform him.
