戸より申越候趣も尤に御座候得共大学様御身上不相片付内右之通仕候而は

江戸より申し越した趣旨ももっともなことではあるが、大学様のご身上が片付かないうちに右の通りのことをしては、事を破ることになる。そうであれば、どのように仰せ出されるかも分からない。その間に上野介殿が病死してしまえば、こちらの武運が尽き果てたということになり、その時は残らず自害するつもりである。そうなれば御家の外聞まで失うというほどではないが、一人一人の存念も達成できる。今まででさえ見合わせてきたのだから、とにかく大学様のご成り行きを見届けてから以後のことを決めるのがよいと話し合った。
しかしながら、万一江戸住居の者が勝手な了簡で事を決めてしまってはいかがなものかと思い、荒木十左衛門様より懇切なお手紙をいただいたことに対するお礼を申し立て、実は江戸の様子見や差し止めも兼ねて、内蔵助、将監、源四郎、伝兵衛、惣右衛門などが巳年の霜月に江戸へ下った。
江戸での住所は三田松本町で、前川忠大夫という日用頭などを務め御用を承る者の屋敷を借宅とした。【この時、瑤泉院様のご機嫌伺いのため折々参上した】

While the message sent from Edo was quite reasonable, taking such action before Lord Daigaku's situation is resolved would ruin our cause. In that case, we cannot know what orders might be issued. If Lord Kōzuke-no-suke should die of illness in the meantime, it would mean our military fortune has run out completely, and at that time we would all commit suicide without exception. Even so, while this would not exactly bring disgrace upon our house's reputation, each person's convictions would be fulfilled. Since we have been holding back until now, it was agreed that we should observe Lord Daigaku's fate and decide on future actions accordingly.
However, concerned that it would be problematic if those residing in Edo were to decide matters based on their own judgment, and using the pretext of expressing gratitude for a kind letter received from Lord Araki Jūzaemon, Kuranosuke, Shōgen, Genshirō, Denbē, Sōemon and others went down to Edo in the 11th month of the year of the Snake, ostensibly for courtesy but actually to observe the situation in Edo and restrain any precipitous action.
Their residence in Edo was in Mita Matsumoto-chō, where they rented the mansion of one Maekawa Chūdayū, who served as a daily supervisor and handled official duties. [During this time, they occasionally visited to pay respects to Lady Yōzen-in.]
