御仕合（不運）により浪人となって七郎右衛門方に居住している段を伊勢守殿が聞かれて、「どこへでも御推薦し身上向きの御世話をいたしましょうから、まずはそれまで伊勢守殿に奉公勤めをなさい」と仰せられた。両親共にこの仰せを承って大変喜び、その旨を三平に申し聞かせたが、三平は「内匠頭様の御不運からまもなく主君を替えることは本意ではないと存じます。その上少々考えもございますから、まずは御免いただきたく」と断った。しかし両親共に老衰したためか、とかく承諾せず、伊勢守殿には大方御承諾もした様子である。そうなっては三平も色々と思案してみたが、内蔵助一味の義については時節が至らず見合わせている最中であった。ところで、この奉公の事は急に決まってしまい、とかく一分（武士の面目）の存念さえ達すれば事は済むと考えたのであろうか。元禄十五年四月十四日、忠孝に迫られて自殺した。神妙な仕方と申すべきか、これを聞く者で誉める者が多く

When Lord Ise-no-kami heard that [Sanpei] had become a rōnin due to his lord's misfortune and was living at Shichirōemon's place, he said, "I will recommend you anywhere and take care of your livelihood, so until then, please serve Lord Ise-no-kami." Both parents received this proposal with great joy and conveyed this to Sanpei, but he declined, saying, "I believe it would be against my principles to change masters so soon after Lord Takumi-no-kami's misfortune. Moreover, I have certain thoughts on the matter, so please excuse me for now." However, perhaps because both parents had grown old and frail, they would not accept his refusal, and it seemed they had more or less given their consent to Lord Ise-no-kami. Under these circumstances, Sanpei considered various options, but he was in the midst of waiting for the right moment regarding Kuranosuke's group's plans. Now, this matter of service became urgent, and perhaps he thought that if he could just fulfill his sense of honor as a samurai, the matter would be resolved. On the 14th day of the 4th month of Genroku 15 [1702], pressed between loyalty and filial piety, he committed suicide. Whether this should be called an admirable act or not, many who heard of it praised him.
