延々之詮義と若輩之衆致立腹同心不仕夫故堀部弥兵衛吉田
忠左衛門等以連紙内蔵助江及返答候は被仰下候趣御尤に奉存候然共私共儀
老人之事に候得は来春迄之存候故不定に御座候若此度御下り不
被成候は御一左右次第一分之存念達し可申との返答故内蔵助殊外
せき候て源四郎抔か申分聞入不申是非共下り候相談に相極申候
一是に付進藤源四郎小山源五右衛門等了簡には江戸者のいきかた死を急き
申候事世上の風聞にのみかゝわり大切之忠節を不存と相見へ候大学様御
仕合以後間もなく大勢之者入込候而いかに広き江戸に而も道中筋へかけ
知不申事有之間敷候左候得は専一之相手を打洩し候事必定にて候
現代語訳
延々とした議論だ」と若い衆が立腹して同意しなかった。それ故、堀部弥兵衛・吉田忠左衛門等が連紙をもって内蔵助へ返答したのは「仰せ下された趣、ごもっともに存じ奉ります。しかしながら私どもは老人のことでございますので、来春までの命も定かではございません。もしこの度お下りにならなければ、ご一報次第、一分の存念を遂げ申すでしょう」との返答であった。故に内蔵助は殊の外焦り、源四郎などの申し分を聞き入れず、是非とも下ることに相談が決まった。
一、これについて進藤源四郎・小山源五右衛門等の了見では「江戸の者の生き方は死を急ぐことばかりで、世上の風聞にのみ関わり、大切な忠節を理解していないと見える。大学様のご仕合の後、間もなく大勢の者が入り込んでいるので、いかに広い江戸でも、道中筋にかけて知らないことはないだろう。そうであれば、専一の相手を討ち漏らすことは必定である」

"endless deliberation," and the younger members became angry and would not agree. Therefore, Horibe Yaheiji, Yoshida Chūzaemon, and others sent a written response to Kuranosuke on connected paper: "What you have said is most reasonable. However, since we are old men, our lives are uncertain until next spring. If you do not come down this time, we shall carry out our resolve upon receiving your next communication." Due to this response, Kuranosuke became extremely impatient, refused to listen to Genshirō's arguments, and the consultation was decided that they must come down at all costs.

Regarding this, in the judgment of Shindō Genshirō, Koyama Gen'goemon, and others: "The Edo men's way of living is only to rush toward death, concerning themselves only with public rumors and seemingly not understanding the importance of true loyalty. Since many people have infiltrated shortly after Lord Daigaku's incident, no matter how vast Edo may be, there should be nothing unknown along the travel routes. If that is the case, it is certain that we will fail to strike our primary target."
