何分にもこちらの者どもは、この節の騒ぎで一層冷静になってしまい、上方にて追々下ってきて、しかるべく申し合わせ、内蔵助と同心しない。この度下る者どもは、内蔵助をはじめ前々の行跡では大方事を仕損じ、御家の名まで下げるであろうと我意を立てている。
そのため一味の者どもが揉め合い、内蔵助が上方を発足する際に至って手を離れた者が六十余人いた。この者どもは残らず臆病なのではなく、定めて内蔵助が仕損じるであろう、そうであれば二の舞になると思ったのであろうか。武運が尽きたか、勇気が弛んで臆病心が出来たのか、源四郎・将監等の申し分に従って退いた者が数多くいる。一味の内でも揉め合いがあった。
○一、内蔵助は同志の者を先だって追々差し下し、内蔵助自身は十月七日に京都を発足した。さて又、江戸表での取り沙汰を憚り、まず鎌倉へ五六日逗留した。

In any case, our men have become even more level-headed due to the recent commotion, and having come down from the Kamigata region one after another, they made proper arrangements but would not join with Kuranosuke. Those who came down this time believed that Kuranosuke and others, based on their previous conduct, would likely bungle the affair and bring down even the family's reputation, and they stubbornly held to this view.
Therefore, the confederates quarreled among themselves, and when Kuranosuke departed from Kamigata, over sixty men withdrew their support. These men were not all cowards; they probably thought that Kuranosuke would surely fail, and if so, they would follow the same fate. Whether their military fortune had run out, their courage had weakened and cowardice had emerged, or for other reasons, many followed the arguments of Genshirō, Shōgen, and others and withdrew. There were also disputes within the confederacy.
○1. Kuranosuke had sent his comrades down ahead of him one by one, and Kuranosuke himself departed from Kyoto on the seventh day of the tenth month. Furthermore, to avoid the rumors circulating in Edo, he first stayed in Kamakura for five or six days.
