の内を配置し、「客衆は誰々か、その中に宗徧も参っているかを見てくるように」と申し含めたところ、間違いなくその人数が参っている由の知らせがございまして、いよいよ今日と決定し、[小豆（本庄住）や（宅）善兵衛切売（之もの共方へ）][五兵衛]方へそろそろと集合するようにと相談し、支度等をいたしました。
○一 この時になって逃亡した者がおり、堅固な者は四十七人でした。
○一 毛利小平太のことですが、普通の外出のようにして出かけ、帰って参りませんでした。この者は同志の内でも特に志が深く気軽な生まれつきのため、小者中間に身をやつして吉良殿の屋敷へも出入りし、江戸中を駆け回り、これまでは随分と心労をいたしましたところ、右の通り逃亡いたしました。おおかたは戸田弾正殿の家中に小平太の兄が勤めており、後の災いを恐れて強く引き止めたものと思われます。同志の者たちは非常に残念がっておりました。

This man was particularly devoted and of a carefree disposition among the conspirators, so he disguised himself as a servant or attendant, entered and left Lord Kira's mansion, and ran about throughout Edo. Until now he had worked very hard, but as mentioned above, he deserted. Most likely, Koheta's older brother served in Lord Toda Danjō's household and, fearing future troubles, strongly restrained him. The conspirators were extremely disappointed about this.
