Perhaps caught off guard, they hastily grabbed their swords and came running one after another with sleepy eyes, but they were cut down one by one with single sword strikes or spear thrusts. Those unable to walk were left as they were. While engaging in combat with fresh opponents, Kuranosuke gave orders to be careful about fire hazards and had it announced that there should be no fires. The forty-six men loudly proclaimed "Retainers of Asano Takumi-no-Kami, avenging our deceased lord!" and calling out "fifty-man group, hundred-man group," they attacked from front and rear. This made it difficult to count the number of attackers, and the mansion's people were reportedly surprised by what seemed like a vast number of assailants. While the samurai on duty defended at the entrance and spear room, the off-duty men rushed to help. During the brief sword fighting that ensued, the close retainers hid Lord Ueno. When they cut into the living quarters, page Suzuki Sadanosin and monk Makino Haruki stood to face them.
