初めは御人数を以御噯可有之様子に候へとも右之断故か何となく
釣灯数多御出し守り居申候也立退候節源五右衛門塀越に
声をかけ主税殿孫太郎殿家来へ一礼申立退候也

現代語訳
最初は御人数をもって応戦するような様子であったが、右の断りのためか、何となく提灯を数多く出して守っているだけであった。立ち退く際、源五右衛門が塀越しに声をかけ、主税殿、孫太郎殿の家来へ一礼申し上げて立ち退いた。
○一、何者とは知れないが、一人が刀をもって切って出て、近松勘六と切り結んだところ、真っ向から二つ三つ続けざまに打ち込んだので、さしもの勘六も目がくらみ、受け太刀になっている間に、大勢の方へ切り入ろうとして駆け返した。勘六が声をかけて「どこへ行くのか、男よ」と言って追いかけて行ったが、手の指と股に手傷を負い、その上庭の末の石につまずいて泉水へ転げ落ちた。相手が押し込んできて、その場で討たれるかと思ったところ、切り殺したと思ったのか引き取ったので、起き上がって追いかけ、右の男を討ち留めた。

Initially, it appeared they would respond with their full force, but perhaps due to the aforementioned warning, they somehow just put out many lanterns and stood guard. When withdrawing, Gengorōemon called out over the fence and bowed respectfully to the retainers of Lord Chikara and Lord Magotarō before withdrawing.
○First, though it is unknown who this person was, one man came cutting his way out with his sword and engaged Chikamatsu Kanroku in combat. When he struck two or three consecutive blows straight to the head, even the formidable Kanroku became dizzy and was forced into a defensive stance. While trying to cut his way toward the main group, he retreated. Kanroku called out "Where are you going, you coward!" and gave chase, but sustained wounds to his fingers and thigh, and moreover stumbled on a stone at the end of the garden and tumbled into the ornamental pond. His opponent pressed the attack, and just when it seemed Kanroku would be killed on the spot, perhaps thinking he had cut him down, the opponent withdrew. Kanroku got up, gave chase, and struck down that man.
