現代語訳
暇乞いに母のもとへ参ったところ、今度は奉公の仕納めであるから、随分と最後をりっぱにやり遂げなさい、見苦しいようでは我が身の黄泉路の障りになる、母に添うように思ってこの下着を着なさいと申され、この小袖をくれたということを申した。上着は大きな袖口、白小袖は女性の袖口であるということ。両人ともに胴着を着て股引をしていた。忠左衛門は新しい浅黄色の下着、両人ともに上着は黒い小袖の紋付であるということ。忠左衛門は白髪交じりの四方髪、助右衛門は月代を剃り立てで年若く、茶で髪を洗っているということ。
一、書院の次の間へ通してお料理を下され、用人が取り次ぎ馳走に出る。
一、伯耆守殿がすぐに御月番の稲葉丹後守殿（正道、御老中従四位下侍従、十万三千石、居城下総佐倉）のもとへお越しになってご相談なさったか、それから登城なさって、昼九つ半過ぎにお帰りになった。

When he went to bid farewell to his mother, she told him: "Since this is the completion of your service, you must conduct yourself admirably to the very end. If you appear unseemly, it will be an obstacle on my path to the afterlife. Think of staying close to your mother and wear this undergarment," and she gave him this kosode. The outer garment has large sleeves, while the white kosode has women's sleeves. Both men wore body garments and hakama trousers. Chūzaemon wore new light yellow undergarments, and both wore black kosode with family crests as outer garments. Chūzaemon had graying hair in the shihōgami style, while Sukeemon had freshly shaven temples, was young, and had washed his hair with tea.
