現代語訳

小袖を着て小脇差を帯びている様子、年来の格好から上野介様と思われたので、去年内匠頭が切りかかった時の手傷を見たところ、これもあったので、いよいよそうだと思ったが、なお念のため、右の者を取り押さえていた番人に死体の肌を脱がせて見たところ、六寸ほどの手傷があり、首の汚れも洗って見せたところ、確かに上野介殿だと申した。その後「左兵衛様はどちらにお入りになったのか。お出合いください」と口々に呼んだけれども、お出合いにならない。もしや手負いまたは即死しているのではないかと詮索したが、見当たらない。そのうちに夜明けが近くなったので、皆が集まり口上書を箱に入れ玄関前に差し置いて屋敷を立ち退いた。上野介様の長屋に居合わせた者がいるように見えたが、戸を立てて籠もっていたので、そのままにして置いた。それから吉田忠左衛門が先達て無縁寺まで参り

He was wearing a kosode and carrying a small wakizashi, and from his appearance over the years, he was thought to be Lord Kōzuke-no-suke. When they examined the wound from when Lord Takumi-no-kami had slashed at him the previous year, it was indeed there, so they became increasingly certain it was him. However, to be absolutely sure, they had the guard who was restraining the man strip the corpse and examine it. There was a wound about six sun long, and after washing the dirt from the head and examining it, they confirmed it was indeed Lord Kōzuke-no-suke. Afterwards, they called out repeatedly, "Where has Lord Saemon gone? Please come forward," but he did not appear. They searched to see if he might be wounded or dead, but could not find him. As dawn approached, everyone gathered together, placed a written statement in a box, left it in front of the entrance, and withdrew from the mansion.
