They requested entry and applied repeatedly, but the gate was not opened and they were refused. So Kuranosuke said, "In that case, we shall wait outside the gate and make our petition," but as dawn had broken, he thought it would be inappropriate in such a busy thoroughfare. Though it was far, they went to Sengaku-ji temple, bringing the aforementioned proof (Kōzuke-no-suke's head) to offer at the mausoleum. Should any unexpected incident occur along the way, so be it - they withdrew to Sengaku-ji temple. We were concerned that pursuers might come after us as well, but we arrived here safely. As for us, we came directly from Muen-ji temple to make our report.
After preparing the above interrogation document, Lord Hōki-no-kami promptly went to the castle and withdrew after midday.
○ On the morning of December 15th, after five o'clock, the forty-six men went to Sengaku-ji temple in Shiba, each still wearing their gauntlets, carrying their damaged spears and naginata still bloodied, guarding the head of Jōshū (Kōzuke-no-suke)
