持参仕候寺内騒動仕先門を堅め申候何れも申候は浅野内匠頭家来
今暁亡主之敵吉良殿を討執是迄参候しかし何れも命助かり
度ために而は無之候尤御寺へ狼藉可致様も無之候上野介殿首を亡主
之墓所へ備申度迄に而候此式相済候迄は御門御差堅め可被下候と頼
則内匠頭様御墓所へ直に参候而香炉に抹香を備手桶に水を
汲上野介殿首を洗ひ御石塔之二段目に差置其後内蔵助
披露に而銘々仮名実名を名乗立如実検仕候事済候而皆一
同に声を揚け愁涙に絶たる由其後方丈へ参内蔵助和尚へ
逢委細申達候也
現代語訳
持参した。寺内は騒動となり、まず門を堅く閉ざした。一同が申すには「浅野内匠頭の家来として、今暁亡主の敵である吉良殿を討ち取り、ここまで参った。しかし、我々は命が助かりたいためではない。もちろん御寺に狼藉を働くつもりもない。上野介殿の首を亡主の墓所に供えたいだけである。この儀式が済むまでは御門をお堅めくださるようお願いする」と頼んだ。
すぐに内匠頭様の御墓所へ直接参り、香炉に抹香を供え、手桶に水を汲んで上野介殿の首を洗い、御石塔の二段目に置いた。その後、内蔵助が披露して、銘々が仮名実名を名乗り、実検のように行った。事が済んで皆が一同に声を上げ、悲しみの涙に咽んだという。その後、方丈へ参り、内蔵助が和尚に会って委細を申し上げた。
英語訳
They brought it with them. The temple became agitated and first barred the gates firmly. All of them said: "As retainers of Asano Takumi-no-kami, we have this dawn struck down our late lord's enemy, Lord Kira, and come here. However, we do not seek to save our lives. Of course, we have no intention of causing any disturbance to your temple. We merely wish to offer Lord Kōzuke-no-suke's head at our late lord's grave. Please keep your gates barred until this ceremony is completed," they requested.
They immediately went directly to Lord Takumi-no-kami's grave, offered incense powder in the incense burner, drew water in a hand bucket, washed Lord Kōzuke-no-suke's head, and placed it on the second tier of the stone pagoda. Afterward, Kuranosuke made an announcement, and each man announced his pseudonym and real name, conducting what resembled an inspection. When this was finished, they all raised their voices together and were overcome with sorrowful tears. After this, they went to the abbot's quarters, where Kuranosuke met with the priest and explained everything in detail.
