道具を帯びすることを憚らないことについて、内蔵助が申しますには「その通りでございます。かねてより一味の者ども多人数のことで、分けるのは困難でございます。その上五、七人では、とても入り込んでも本意を達することはできないと存じます。長い武器は武士が持つべきものです。これもまた大勢と渡り合う時に本望を遂げるためです。上を憚り奉存じます印には、甲冑を着用せず、鉄砲を持参いたしませんでした。多人数を殺すことについては、かねてより申し合わせで、そのようなことがないようにと存じておりましたが、彼方でも主人を囲い防戦し敵対いたします。本人を討つことの妨げになりましたゆえ、右の通りでございます。こちらから強いて殺すことはいたしません証拠には、一人としてとどめを刺しませんでした。ただ打ち伏せ、働かない程度に仕置きしたと申し上げます」

Regarding carrying weapons without restraint, Kuranosuke stated: "That is correct. Since our confederates have always been numerous, it would be difficult to divide them. Moreover, with only five or seven men, we believed it would be impossible to accomplish our purpose even if we entered. Long weapons are what samurai should carry. This is also to achieve our earnest desire when facing large numbers. As a sign of our reverence for authority, we did not wear armor or bring firearms. Regarding killing many people, we had agreed beforehand to avoid such things, but they surrounded and defended their master, opposing us as enemies. This became an obstacle to striking down the main target, which is why things went as described. As proof that we did not deliberately kill from our side, we did not deliver a fatal blow to a single person. We merely struck them down and subdued them to the point where they could not fight back," he reported.
