浅野内匠の家来へ仰せ渡された覚書
浅野内匠の件について、勅使御馳走の御用を仰せ付けられていたにもかかわらず、その上で時節柄殿中を憚らない不届きな仕業により御仕置きを仰せ付けられた吉良上野介の件は、御構いなく差し置かれていたところ、主人の讐を報いると申し立て、内匠の家来四十六人が徒党を組み、上野介宅へ押し込み、飛道具なども持参して上野介を討ち取った始末は、公儀を恐れない段、重々不届きである。これにより切腹を申し付けるものである。

Memorandum delivered to the retainers of Asano Takumi
Regarding the matter of Asano Takumi: He had been appointed to the duty of entertaining the imperial envoy, but due to his inexcusable misconduct in the palace during that time, punishment was ordered. The matter of Kira Kōzuke-no-suke, who received this punishment, was to be left alone without further interference. However, claiming to avenge their master's death, forty-six retainers of Takumi formed a band, broke into Kōzuke-no-suke's residence with weapons including projectile weapons, and killed Kōzuke-no-suke. This conduct shows repeated acts of insubordination and lack of fear toward the government. Therefore, [they are] ordered to commit seppuku.
