【朱】この両人と高田群兵衛の三人は同志としての振る舞いがあったものの、その後臆病な働きをしたため除かれたのであろうか。
●一、堀部安兵衛と奥田孫大夫は、上野介殿（吉良義央）が生存しているという件について、初めは明確でなかったところ、確実に聞き届けて、一向に彼の宅へ切り込んで主君の仇を報じようと思った。しかし上杉家より厳重な守護があると聞いては、なかなか二三人で討ち入りして犬死にして笑いものを残すよりは、と走り回って同志を募り、せめて思い切った仲間二十人あれば、是非とも切り込んで生死をかけた勝負をしようと誘ったけれども、一人として決心する者はいなかった。結局、家老の安井彦右衛門と磯貝十郎左衛門に向かって「安兵衛と孫大夫は大変な分別のない者である。その上人を集めて切り込んで死にたければ、自分たちの心底次第で、他人まで苦しめることは道理に合わない。また同心すべきではない」と言われるのを聞いて、いよいよ歯ぎしりをして、家の重臣

However, hearing that the Uesugi family provided strict protection, rather than launching an attack with just two or three men and dying like dogs while becoming a laughingstock, they ran around recruiting comrades, thinking that if they could gather at least twenty determined companions, they would definitely attack and fight a life-or-death battle.
