有しか所用有て他行す斯て十二月十四日之一乱果て二
三日過立帰此有増を聞て一同に不討入事を悔自殺して
失しと也一説に御籏本に所縁有故大事の洩ん事を
思ひ内蔵助人数に不加とも申候又一説におめ〳〵と存命成へ
からすとて親兄之諫に而自殺すとも申候

養置候処用事有之当霜月上方江罷越し一昨日

現代語訳
養子に仕え、赤穂落去の後は兄の左門殿《小十人番頭》の方へ身を寄せていた。しかし用事があって他所へ行った。かくて十二月十四日の一乱が果てて二、三日過ぎ立ち帰ってこの有様を聞いて、一同に討ち入りしなかったことを悔い、自殺してしまったということである。一説には御旗本に所縁があるため、大事が漏れることを思い、内蔵助が人数に加えなかったとも言う。また一説には、おめおめと存命するべきではないとして、親兄の諫めによって自殺したとも言う。

He served as an adopted son, and after the fall of Akō, he took refuge with his elder brother Samon (Chief of the Small Guard Unit). However, he went elsewhere on business. Thus, after the uprising of December 14th ended and two or three days passed, he returned and upon hearing of this situation, regretted not having participated in the attack with the others and committed suicide. One theory holds that because he had connections to the hatamoto, fearing that important matters might leak out, Kuranosuke did not include him among the participants. Another theory states that thinking he should not shamefully remain alive, he committed suicide upon the admonition of his parent and elder brother.
▢The matter reported to Samon's administrative office: Regarding Mokunosuke, whom I had adopted and was caring for - he had business and went to the Kamigata region this past November, and when he returned the day before yesterday, he committed suicide. Though we conducted various investigations, there were no written notes or anything left behind.
