唱を気毒に存遁置候而残念に候此後此者へ御逢候は

田中貞四郎。この者も同様で、同四日に欠落した。
一、今日まで丈夫で二心のない者は、我々で五十人である。
一、去年夏、籠城の覚悟の節に臆病を働かせたが、前非を悔いるとして、大学殿は善悪を問わずさまざまな手立てを尽くし、内蔵助方へ参り、頭を下げ手を束ねて同志の人数に入った。しかし、またこの度の首尾に驚き逃げる大臆病を、ここに記す。粕谷勘左衛門、井口忠兵衛、杉浦順右衛門。この者どもは悪い奴である。当春討って捨てるはずであったが、世上の噂を気の毒に思い逃がし置いたのは残念である。この後この者にお会いになることがあれば、このように申したと仰っていただきたい。

田中貞四郎 (Tanaka Teishirō): This man likewise [stole and] deserted on the same 4th day.
Today, the stalwart and single-hearted men among us number fifty.
Last summer, during the preparations for a siege, [several men] showed cowardice, but claiming to repent their past wrongdoing, Daigaku-dono employed various means regardless of right or wrong, went to Kuranosuke's side, bowed his head, clasped his hands together, and joined the ranks of our comrades. However, [he and others] were again frightened by this recent turn of events and fled in great cowardice. I record this here: Kasuya Kanzaemon, Iguchi Chūbei, and Sugiura Jun'emon. These men are wicked fellows. We should have struck them down and abandoned them this spring, but regrettably, we let them escape out of concern for public opinion. If you should meet with these men hereafter, please tell them that this is what was said [about them].
