という人がやって来て、そば切りを食べながら話をするには、「二、三日前に店を返して宿なしになっています。そのため、うどんやそば切りなどを食事として過ごしております」と申されました。私が申しましたのは、「どのような事情で店をお上げになったのですか」と尋ねましたところ、「旦那の弟である大学殿の閉門が御免となり、安芸守殿へお預けになられました。そうしますと頼りとするところもなく、その上、家賃が高く、割り煙草の行商などでは中々生計も立てがたく候故、親しい者と相談して、明朝赤穂へ帰ることにしました。故郷のことですから、どのようにでも生計を立てることができると申す者がおります」とのことです。それについて、「昼は氷も解けて道が悪いので、夜中に道中の支度を整えるように、今夜九つ時に出発いたします。うどんやそば切り六十人前を用意し、酒も調えておいてください」と

...came and while eating soba noodles, he told me in conversation: "Two or three days ago I returned my shop and am now without lodging. Therefore, I am getting by with udon and soba noodles as my meals." I asked him, "What circumstances led you to close your shop?" He replied, "My master's younger brother, Daigaku-dono, has been pardoned from house arrest and placed under the custody of Aki-no-kami-dono. With this, I have no one to rely upon, and moreover, with high rent and only peddling cheap tobacco, it is quite difficult to make a living. Therefore, I consulted with close associates and decided to return to Akō tomorrow morning. Since it is my hometown, there are those who say I can make a living there somehow." Regarding this, he said, "Since the ice melts during the day making the roads bad, I will prepare for the journey during the night and depart tonight at the ninth hour (around midnight). Please prepare udon and soba noodles for sixty people and have sake ready as well."
