夥しく聞血の匂はつと仕候又暫時之間泣声止不申又其後
屋敷外江半分過も残り候而外廻りを堅め申候引払候節五十人
程に而回向院江参候様に相見申候
現代語訳
居りました者が「きっとお聞き及びのことと存じますが、浅野内匠頭家来が主人の仇である上野介殿へ今晩夜討ちを仕掛けております。ご心配には及びませんのでお通りになって結構です。ご見物なさることではございません。見物は互いのためによろしくありません。どうしてもご覧になりたければ物陰からご覧ください」と申しましたので、遠方より見物いたしました。屋敷を取り囲みました時分は九時半過ぎでございました。半時ほど過ぎて太鼓を打ち、表門より押し込みました。続いて表門より松明で打ち入りました。また一時ほど物音が静かになり、男女の泣き声がひどく聞こえ、血の匂いがぷんとしました。また暫くの間泣き声が止みません。その後屋敷の外へ半分以上も残って外回りを固めておりました。引き払う際は五十人ほどで回向院へ参る様子に見受けられました。

the person sitting there said: "You must surely have heard about this - Asano Takumi-no-kami's retainers are launching a night attack tonight against Lord Kōzuke-no-suke to avenge their master. There is no cause for concern, so you may pass through. This is not something to watch as entertainment. Watching would not be good for anyone involved. If you absolutely must look, please watch from behind cover." So I observed from a distance. They surrounded the mansion at around half past nine. After about half an hour had passed, they beat drums and stormed through the main gate. Following that, they entered through the main gate carrying torches. Then for about an hour the sounds became quiet, with terrible crying of men and women heard, and the smell of blood was pungent. The crying continued for some time without stopping. After that, more than half remained outside the mansion, securing the perimeter. When they withdrew, about fifty people appeared to be heading toward Ekōin Temple.
