公儀之恐候間 上使御方様御目付衆ゟ検使を請追手に而切腹
仕る外無他事段申候切腹之節存寄をも申上候はゝ定而上野介殿
被 仰付様も可有之候哉と相談相極候又大野九郎兵衛《割書：六百五十石｜》を
初兎角御城首尾能引渡其上に而存寄も可有之候御城引渡し
遅候而は対 公儀鬱悖【憤ヵ】をとけ申仕形に候其上大学様御為不可然
と申者も大勢有之候得共其節之義に候へは内蔵助初同心之者兎角
不聞入切腹之相談に相極申候左候而存寄之面々内蔵助宛之神

「公儀を恐れるところがあるので、上使の御方様や御目付衆から検使を請い、追腹にて切腹する外に他に方法はない」と申した。切腹の節に存じ寄りをも申し上げるならば、きっと上野介殿にも何らかのお咎めがあるであろうかと相談して決めた。また大野九郎兵衛《割書：六百五十石》を初めとして「とかく御城を首尾よく引き渡し、その上で存じ寄りもあるであろう。御城引き渡しが遅れては、公儀に対して鬱憤を晴らす仕方に見えるであろうし、その上大学様のおためにもよろしくない」と申す者も大勢いたけれども、その節の義理であるので、内蔵助を初めとする同心の者たちはとかく聞き入れず、切腹の相談に決めた。そうして存じ寄りの面々が内蔵助宛ての神文を差し出した者は六十余人である。すなわち

"Since we fear the shogunate's authority, we have no other recourse but to request inspectors from the envoy officials and magistrates, and commit seppuku by following our lord in death." They decided through consultation that if they were to express their grievances at the time of seppuku, Kōzuke-no-suke-dono would surely face some form of punishment as well. Also, starting with Ōno Kurōbei 《marginal note: 650 koku》, many said, "We should skillfully hand over the castle first, and then express our grievances afterward. If the castle handover is delayed, it will appear to the shogunate as if we are venting our resentment, and moreover, it would not be good for Daigaku-sama." However, since this was a matter of duty at that time, Kuranosuke and his allies would not listen to such arguments and decided on the plan of seppuku. Thus, those who shared this resolve and submitted sworn oaths to Kuranosuke numbered over sixty people. Namely:
