過にしわかれの折から返〳〵も母ありと思ふへからす候よし
申候へともまた立帰り我を弔ふこと是孝に似たる不幸なり
先我先達て死を教へ武士の恥ならん事を示す是また
子を愛する道にもあらむかと女こゝろの一すしにおもひ極て
斯なりし侍るものなりかしこ

現代語訳
を見ると、その文に曰く
過ぎし別れの折から、重ね重ねも母がいると思ってはなりません、と申しましたけれども、また立ち帰って私を弔うこと、これは孝行に似た不幸でございます。まず私が先立って死を教え、武士の恥となるであろうことを示します。これもまた子を愛する道でもありましょうかと、女心の一途に思い極めて、このようになりました次第でございます。恐れ入ります。

惣右衛門はこれを顔に押し当てて謝り、ああ悔しいと泣き泣き、葬礼の営み
英語訳
When he looked at it, the letter said:
From the time of our past parting, I told you repeatedly that you must not think of your mother as still living, but you have returned again to mourn me—this is a misfortune that resembles filial piety. First, I will precede you in death to teach you, and show you what would become a samurai's shame. This too may be a way of loving one's child—with such single-minded feminine resolve I have come to this decision. With respect.

Sōzaemon pressed this letter to his face and wept in remorse, crying "Ah, how regrettable!" and tearfully began the funeral arrangements
