原惣右衛門こそ去年伝奏の時節見知たる覧とよはゝれは惣右衛門
まいり只一目見てから〳〵と笑ひあら嬉しや是こそ上野介殿ニ而候い
けるそや吉良殿常に被申しは若夜討なと入たらは若殿原と打
あいて伐れん事もかなしかるらん又老人とて逃ん事も口惜し所詮
能所に隠れんとの玉ひしか誠に隠れて候然共血にそみて首も慥に
みへわかす候程に洗わせて御覧候へと申もあへす首をもち座敷を
立てあたりなる此手水鉢の側に望て白 髪（ひん）の顔をなて氷解
ては水らうたいの首を洗て見れはあら血は流れてもとの上野と
見へにけりけに名を穢す腰抜けは誰もかくこそあるへ
現代語訳
原惣右衛門こそ去年伝奏の時節見知っているだろうと呼ばれると、惣右衛門が参り、ただ一目見てからからと笑い「ああ嬉しや、これこそ上野介殿でございます」と言った。「そうだ、吉良殿が常におっしゃっていたのは『もし夜討ちなどが入ったならば、若殿原と打ち合って斬られることも悲しいであろう。また老人として逃げることも口惜しい。所詮良い所に隠れよう』とおっしゃっていたが、誠に隠れておられた。しかし血に染まって首もはっきりと見分けがつかないほどなので、洗わせてご覧ください」と申すや否や、首を持って座敷を立ち、辺りにあるこの手水鉢の側に寄って、白髪の顔を撫でて氷が解けた水で首を洗って見れば、ああ血は流れて元の上野介と見えるのであった。げに名を穢す腰抜けは誰もかくこそあるべき。
