義と奉存罷在候処追而之御沙汰承り候処上野介様御卒
去は無之段奉承知候家中之侍共は無骨之者共一筋に
主人壱人を存御法式之義も不弁相手方無慮段承之
城地離散仕候義を相嘆申候年寄頭立候者共末々を
教訓仕候而も無骨之者共安心不仕候此段年寄共了
簡を以難申宥候間不顧憚申上候義に御座候乍然上野
助様江御仕置奉願候と申義に而は無御座候御両所様御
働を以家中納得可仕筋御立被成被下候は可難有奉存候
当表御上意之上言上仕候而は城御受取被成候御滞に

ことと存じておりましたところ、追って御沙汰を承った結果、上野介様のご逝去はなかったということを承知いたしました。家中の侍どもは無骨な者どもで、ひたすら主人一人のことを思い、御法式の義も理解せず、相手方に不慮の段があったと聞き、城地を離散することを嘆いております。年寄や頭立った者どもが末々を教訓いたしましても、無骨な者どもは安心いたしません。この段について年寄どもの了簡をもってしても申し宥めることが難しいため、憚りを顧みず申し上げる義でございます。しかしながら、上野介様へ御仕置を願い申すという義ではございません。御両所様のお働きにより、家中が納得できるような筋をお立て下さいますならば、ありがたく存じます。当表において御上意の上で言上いたしましたのは、城をお受け取りになられる御滞留に

We believed this to be the case, but upon receiving further official word, we came to understand that Lord Kōzuke-no-suke had not actually died. The retainers of our domain are simple-minded fellows who think only of their one master, do not understand proper protocols, and having heard that there was an unexpected incident involving the opposing party, they lament having to disperse from the castle grounds. Even when the senior retainers and leaders instruct the junior members, these simple-minded fellows remain unsettled. Since even the senior retainers cannot pacify them through their reasoning on this matter, we presume to speak up despite our reservations. However, this does not mean we are petitioning for punishment to be imposed upon Lord Kōzuke-no-suke. If Your Lordships would graciously establish a course of action through your efforts that would satisfy our domain members, we would be most grateful.
