現代語訳

『鉢の木』の謡いに「多くの木を持っておりますが、皆人に差し上げております」とあるが、今も梅・桜・松を持っております。いつものように、手軽には鉢植えに唐辛子の木やケイトウを植え、余程洒落てサボテンを買い残した所が、梅・桜・松好きの道楽として、算学の商売にありつき、万事皆このようなものである。

頭から大通の被り物は回らず（理解できず）、いや、そのような難しいことなら通り者にならずともよいこと。いかい大馬鹿という人は箱根の先へおいでなされ。なんでも心を軽やかに持ち、慰みながら暮らしなば、狂いも楽しみあり。いくつになっても死ぬ気はなく、ここばかりが少し野暮かもしれず。

「勝った時ばかりで、後でかまわぬから」

英語訳

In the Noh chant of "Hachi no Ki" (The Potted Trees), it says "I have many trees, but I offer them all to people," and even now I have plum, cherry, and pine trees. As usual, for convenience I plant red pepper trees and cockscomb in pots, and quite stylishly bought some cactus as well. Having these preferences for plum, cherry, and pine trees as a hobby, I've gotten into the business of mathematics, and everything is like this.

The great connoisseur's headgear doesn't suit me (I don't understand it). Well, if it's such difficult business, it's fine not to become a man-about-town. Anyone who's a great fool should go beyond Hakone. Whatever happens, if you keep your heart light and live in comfort and amusement, even madness has its pleasures. No matter how old you get, there's no thought of dying. Perhaps only this place is a bit boorish.
