現代語訳

備後の三郎が桜の木に落書きをして見せてから、子供のいたずらで白壁の白いものはなくなった。また僅かの間に、今は白壁の汚れていないものはない。近頃はまず子供たちが大通になり、子を見ることは親に及ばないと言うけれども、その親々の欲目かは知らないが、「俺らが子供の時はこのようではなかった」と言うのももっともである。全ての事が大人びている。

悪いいたずらもなく遊んで帰ると、煙草を飲み、爺さん婆さんの話は洗濯しても古いし、昔話の行き過ぎに落ちが来て笑う。これから見れば良い年をして野暮なものは、よくよくのべらぼう、べらぼうがあると海苔売りをすると言うけれども、姫海苔も今は丸くして売る世の中。子供を見ても通にはなりなさい。

英語訳

Ever since Saburo of Bingo drew graffiti on a cherry tree to show off, children's mischief has left no white walls remaining white. And in just a short time, there are now no white walls that remain unstained. Lately, children have become sophisticated connoisseurs first, and while it's said that observing children cannot match parents' insight, whether it's the parents' favoritism or not, it's quite reasonable for them to say "when we were children, it wasn't like this." Everything has become more adult-like.

Playing without harmful mischief and returning home, smoking tobacco, the stories of grandfathers and grandmothers are old even after washing, and the punchlines of old tales become excessive and laughable. From this perspective, those who are boorish despite their good age are truly foolish - they say that fools sell seaweed, but even premium nori is now sold in round shapes in this world. Even when looking at children, they should become connoisseurs.
