現代語訳

武部源蔵の門人である千代まが言うことには、
「お師匠様の留守中に習うのは大きな損坊主。頭の清書が後になっては一字も読めず、そこを案じて旅屋の看板『旅屋』と知らせ、いずれも抜け目は昔からなし。その上をまた近年は按摩も増えて『按摩』と知らせ、風鈴の音でそばときりと知らせ、女性のいない世の中なり。その上を行く通人、形をちょっと大きくするのも骨が折れましょう」

「いかめしき音や、あられの日の木笠」は芭蕉翁の句である。
昔は駒下駄の音には少し心を動かされたものだが、今の駒下駄はすっきりと上品にならず、駒の音に驚かぬのも太平の印であろう。駒下駄は庭の内から隣まで行く時は雲のを、今では遠い道も履いて歩き、女の駒は巴御前の気風振りで、女の力持ち。女は女の用が良し。中抜きぞうりに紐をつけ、六阿弥陀とはありがたい。

「叩き、夏豆腐」の男、駒下駄の音、いずれも怪しくわからず。

英語訳

Chiyoma, a student of Takebe Genzō, says:
"Learning during the master's absence is a great loss, you bald monk. When the clean copying of characters comes later, not a single character can be read. Worrying about this, they put up tavern signs saying 'tavern' to advertise, and none have missed opportunities since ancient times. Moreover, in recent years, masseurs have also increased and advertise as 'masseur,' wind chimes announce soba and udon with their sounds - it's a world without subtlety. Going beyond this, for connoisseurs to make their appearance just a bit more impressive must be quite troublesome."

"What a dignified sound, wooden hat on a hail day" is a verse by Master Bashō.
In the past, the sound of geta clogs would stir one's heart a little, but today's geta clogs are not elegantly refined. That we are not startled by the sound of clogs must be a sign of peaceful times. For geta clogs, when going from inside the garden to the neighbor's, one wore cloud-patterned ones, but now people wear them walking even long distances. Women's geta clogs are in the bold style of Tomoe Gozen, showing women's strength. Women are best suited for women's tasks. Sandals with center removed, with straps attached - "Six Amidas" - how auspicious.

The man calling "beating, summer tofu," the sound of geta clogs - everything is strangely incomprehensible.
