湯之盤銘曰苟日新（とふのはんのめいにいわくまことにひゝにあらた也）

湯の盤の銘に曰く「苟に日に新たなり、日々新たにして又日々に新たなり」

染色や模様も、その時々の流行物で、後から追いかけられるようで、図々しい者は流行のやり方を最後に覚える。女性の好みもその通りで、八重藤や蝶、鳥の舞垂れ、手拭いに染める紫紋様などと、小袖が手軽になって、金々とした顔でも大通とはいかない。しかし流行の事によると、裏模様の始めにはどうか粗相で、小袖の裏を着たようで気の毒らしかった。見慣れたら、

そうでもない。あまり思いつきすぎると下品になります。黒の小袖の廃れないところへお心をお付けなされ。いつ着ても同じ事で、清らかな年の正月もあれだとは誰も言いはしない。ここには男は御上達、何を着ても知らず。ここに気のつく男は女もどうせん。また女の男当然には羽織とはと年寄りが言い伝えたが、若い女性の羽織心では袴を履いて亭主の名代をする気でも、女は女の様が良い。私は口不調法という女は試してみて口をたんと利くなり。女性の面は内輪では大極上々吉、口を利くのは下の下なり。

The inscription on the bathing basin says: "If one truly renews oneself daily, day by day one becomes new, and again day by day one becomes new."

It's the same no matter when you wear it - even for the pure New Year, no one would criticize that. Here, men are accomplished, regardless of what they wear. Men who pay attention to such things leave women at a loss. Also, regarding the matter of women and men - while elders have traditionally said something about haori (short coat), if young women wear haori with the intention of wearing hakama (formal divided skirt) and acting as their husband's representative, it's still better for women to maintain feminine ways. As for women who claim to be poor speakers - when tested, they actually talk quite a lot. A woman's face is rated as excellent supreme good within the inner circle, but being talkative is rated as the lowest of the low.
