現代語訳

男の中に女有り、女の中に男有り。

鎌倉朝比奈の切通しに石屋の五平という者がいた。大酒飲みで道楽者で、身代も台無しにしてしまい、母親は明け暮れ心配していた。ようやく女房を持たせて少し大人しくなり、かすかに暮らしていたが、近所の振る舞い（宴会）に呼ばれて、例の酒癖が出てしまった。それから四、五人で鶴岡八幡宮へ遊びに行き、上がると、そのまま小間物店で嘔吐してしまい、一座も汚くなった。相手の遊女が上着を脱いで拭き、枕をさせて寝かせたので、たわいなく寝て明け方となった。

遊女の芸者というものは、素人の女性は泥棒のように思っているけれども、この程度のことで金をもらう女にはない。もっとも万人に一人と思いなさい。

酔いが覚めて面目なく帰ったが、初会の遊女があのように世話になり、そのままでは置かれない。幸い母親も親類のところへ湯治に行かれて留守なので、女房に嘘をついて里へやり、家財のものを残らず売り払い、金四、五両こしらえて、その遊女のところへ裏（二回目の指名）に行き、段々と礼を言い、「あまり粗末ですが、寝間着にでも着てください」と小袖一つやったところ、「必ずお前さんはお腹をお立てになるな。これを私にくださるお方とは見受けません。はて、勤めの身であのような事はいくらでもある事」と小袖を返したので、「今更何と」言い訳なく、段々の訳をありのままに話したところ、座敷を立って部屋へ帰り、金五十両持って来て、「これをお前に上げますから、お上さんを呼び戻し、お袋様を大切になさいませ。私は二親ながらいない者、お前はうらやましい」と言った。これは慈しい親に大孝行である。

There are women among men, and there are men among women.

At the Asaina Pass in Kamakura, there was a stoneworker named Gohei. He was a heavy drinker and a wastrel who had ruined his family fortune, causing his mother constant worry day and night. Finally, they found him a wife, and he became somewhat more settled, living quietly. However, when invited to a neighborhood banquet, his usual drinking habit emerged. Afterward, he went with four or five others to visit Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine, and upon going up, he immediately vomited at a sundries shop, making the whole gathering filthy. His courtesan companion took off her outer garment to clean up, made him a pillow, and put him to bed, where he slept helplessly until dawn.

While ordinary women think of courtesans and geishas as if they were thieves, there are none among women who would do such things for money. You should consider them as perhaps one in ten thousand.

When he sobered up, he returned home in shame, but having been so cared for by the courtesan at their first meeting, he could not leave things as they were. Fortunately, his mother had gone to relatives for hot spring therapy and was away, so he lied to his wife, sent her back to her family home, sold all the household goods without exception, scraped together four or five ryō, and went for a second visit (ura) to that courtesan. He gradually expressed his gratitude, saying, "Though it's quite humble, please use this as sleepwear," and offered her a kosode. She replied, "You must not get angry with me. I don't see you as the kind of person who would give me this. After all, in this profession, such things happen all the time," and returned the kosode. When he said, "What do you mean now?" and told her honestly all the circumstances, she left the sitting room, returned to her chamber, brought back fifty ryō, and said, "I'm giving this to you, so call back your wife and take good care of your mother. I have no parents, so I envy you." This represents great filial piety toward loving parents.
