所ニ非サルナリ寧ロ一矢ヲ放テ自殺スルニ如カス

セシム其子島冠者爲頼今年九歲次子五歲女子二歳
ナリ其妻二幼子ヲ携ヘテ遁レ匿ル爲朝海岸ニ至ル

艦即覆没ス餘衆畏レテ進マス爲朝舘ニ入リ先ユ爲

殺セルヲ知リ先進シテ其首ヲ斬ト云￣フ一書ニ云足利
義兼ハ實ニ爲朝ノ子ナリ足利義康密ニ襁褓ノ中ヨ
リ養ヒ以テ子トス故ニ世人爲朝ノ子タルヲ知ル者
ナシ義兼身ノ長￣ケ九尺二寸膂力人ニ過ク亦頗ル爲朝
ニ類スト云フ或ハ然ラン
　　爲朝ノ行事固ヨリ世人ノ知ル所ニシテ必シモ
　　余カ贅言ヲ待タサルナリ今琉球藩史ヲ修ス巻
　　首ニ爲朝ノ傳ヲ置￣ク ハ彼國人ヲシテ爲朝ノ末路ヲ
　　紀ス或ハ大島ニ死ストシ或ハ逃レテ琉球ニ入

現代語訳

なればこそ家君（源氏）の宿志を継ぎ、陰に大業をなそうと欲したのである。
私には思うところがある。今戦って徒に人命を損なうのは、私の好むところではない。むしろ一矢を放って自殺するに如かず」
と。そこで全ての従者を召し集め、各々に物を与え、懇ろに諭して散去させた。その子島冠者為頼は今年九歳、次子は五歳、女子は二歳であった。その妻は二人の幼子を携えて逃れ隠れた。為朝は海岸に至った。
敵兵は舳先と船尾を連ねて来襲した。為朝は大矢を放って一艦に命中させた。
艦はすぐさま覆没した。残りの衆は畏れて進まなかった。為朝は館に入り、まず為頼を刺殺して自殺した。茂光等は陸に上がり、まさに館に入ろうとしたが、士卒で敢えて先頭に立つ者はいなかった。加藤景廉が、為朝がすでに自殺したことを知り、先進してその首を斬ったという。

一書に云う、足利義兼は実に為朝の子である。足利義康が密かに襁褓の中より養い、もって子とした。故に世人で為朝の子であることを知る者はいない。義兼は身長九尺二寸、膂力は人に勝り、また頗る為朝に類するという。あるいはその通りであろう。

為朝の行状は固より世人の知るところであって、必ずしも私の贅言を待たないのである。今、琉球藩史を修するに当たり、巻首に為朝の伝を置くのは、彼の国の人をして為朝の末路を知らしめるためである。或いは大島で死んだとし、或いは逃れて琉球に入ったとし

為朝は伊豆の大島より八丈島に移り、鬼界に往き、琉球に渡った。諸島に社を立てて祭る。島の神と言う。

That is precisely why I wished to continue the cherished aspiration of my house (the Minamoto) and secretly accomplish great deeds.

Thereupon he summoned all his followers, gave each of them gifts, earnestly instructed them, and had them disperse. His son Shimakanja Tameyori was nine years old this year, his second son was five, and his daughter was two. His wife fled and hid, taking the two young children with her. Tametomo went to the seashore.
The enemy troops came with their prows and sterns connected in formation. Tametomo shot a great arrow and struck one warship.
The ship immediately capsized and sank. The remaining forces were afraid and did not advance. Tametomo entered his residence, first stabbed Tameyori to death, then killed himself. Shigemitsu and the others landed and were about to enter the residence, but none of the soldiers dared to go first. Katō Kagenori, knowing that Tametomo had already committed suicide, advanced first and cut off his head, it is said.

One book states that Ashikaga Yoshikane was indeed Tametomo's son. Ashikaga Yoshiyasu secretly raised him from swaddling clothes and made him his son. Therefore, no one in the world knew he was Tametomo's child. Yoshikane was nine shaku and two sun tall, his physical strength exceeded that of others, and he greatly resembled Tametomo, it is said. Perhaps this is true.

Tametomo's deeds are naturally known to the world and do not necessarily require my superfluous words. Now, in compiling this History of Ryukyu Domain, I place Tametomo's biography at the beginning of the volume so that the people of that country may know of Tametomo's final fate. Some say he died on Ōshima, others say he escaped and entered Ryukyu...

Tametomo moved from Ōshima in Izu to Hachijōjima, went to Kikaijima, and crossed to Ryukyu. He established shrines on various islands for worship. He is called the island deity.
