一文武天皇二年務廣貳文博士等八人兵ヲ率ヰテ南

Preface to the History of Ryukyu Domain

In the second year of Emperor Monmu's reign, Mucō no Daiichi Hakase and seven other officials led troops to the southern islands and pacified them. The following year, people from the southern islands came to court following the hakase and presented local products as tribute. Consequently, there were differences in the conferring of ranks and granting of stipends. From this time, Ryukyu's belonging to our country has been long-standing. During the Ōei era, when Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu lost the national polity and erred in the great principles, Ryukyu apparently also followed this example and first received investiture from the Ming Dynasty, ultimately being unable to correct this situation.
