と申者なり君（きみ）此頃 諸（しよ）狸へ官名
を当へ給ふと聞何卒某も相応の
官位を申請奉らんと態々推参
仕れり然る上は何等の御用をも仰付
られ偏に官名の儀宜敷願奉ると
夫より日開野村の様子其外所々
にて高名ありし次第を逐一（ちくいち）語り
ければ六右衛門悦喜あつて申けるは扨は
聞及びし禁長とは其方なるが
噂さには聞けども逢は始て也と夫より
盃を出して酒 宴（ゑん）をなし禁長
には旅宿をあたへける夫より禁長は
只一心に書を読学をなし身をこ
らして勤ければ未だ二十日にもなら
ずして和漢の古事を覚へ今は
官名の印可を授る計りに出精し
ける時に六右衛門はつく〳〵思慮を廻（めぐ）
らしわれ今四国の首領と成って

と申す者です。君、この頃諸々の狸に官名を与えていらっしゃると聞きました。何とぞ某も相応の官位を申請させていただきたく、わざわざ推参いたしました。その上は何等のご用事でも仰せつけられ、ひとえに官名の儀、よろしくお願い申し上げます」と言った。
それから日開野村の様子、その外あちこちで高名であった次第を一つ一つ詳しく語ったところ、六右衛門は大変喜んで申すには「さてはあの噂に聞いた禁長とはそなたのことか。
噂には聞いていたが、会うのは初めてである」と言って、それから盃を出して酒宴をなし、禁長には旅の宿を与えた。それから禁長はただひたすらに書を読み学問をなし、身を粉にして勤めたので、まだ二十日にもならないうちに和漢の古事を覚え、今は官名の許可を授かるばかりに精進していた。その時に六右衛門はつくづくと思慮を巡らし「われ今四国の首領となって

"I am one called Kinchō. My lord, I have heard that recently you have been granting official titles to various tanuki. I would very much like to request an appropriate official rank for myself as well, and have come here specially to make this humble visit. Furthermore, I would accept any duties you might assign me, and earnestly request your favorable consideration regarding the matter of an official title."
He then recounted in detail the situation in Hibiraki-no village and his various distinguished deeds in other places. Rokuemon was greatly pleased and said, "So you are the Kinchō I have heard about in rumors!
I had heard the rumors, but this is the first time we meet." He then brought out sake cups and held a banquet, providing Kinchō with lodging for travelers. From then on, Kinchō devoted himself single-mindedly to reading books and studying, working so diligently that in less than twenty days he had mastered ancient Chinese and Japanese classics, and was now applying himself earnestly to receive authorization for an official title.
