れは鹿子も心付書状を懐中し
禁長にいとまを告（つげ）名残おしげに振
り帰り〳〵帰へりしが是ぞ此世の別
れとは後にぞ思ひ知られたり扨禁長
は鷹の死骸（しがい）人しらぬ所へ葬り印の石（いし）を
おき身拵へして渡し場近く出来り
しが折節長雨【春雨ヵ】打続殊の外洪水なれ
ば渡るべき方 便（てだて）もなく其上夜はほの〳〵と
明渡り如何（いかゞ）いせんと身を揉（もみ）あせりしが
程まで武運に尽（つき）しかと浜辺にどふと
みを投（なげ）て正 体（だい）もなく歎（なげ）きしが
良（やゝ）心を取直し我身ながら不覚
の歎なり一まづ日開野へ立 帰（か）へり
大和（やまと）様へも御咄し申鷹の敵を

是幸ひと船に飛のり難（なん）なく向（むこう）へ飛（とび）
越（こへ）て夫より道（みち）を急（いそ）き日開野さし
現代語訳
それで鹿子も心づいて書状を懐中し、禁長に暇を告げ、名残惜しげに振り返り振り返り帰っていったが、これがこの世の別れとは後になって思い知らされることとなった。さて禁長は鷹の死骸を人知れぬ所へ葬り、印の石を置いて身支度をして渡し場近くに出てきたが、折しも長雨が打ち続き、殊の外の洪水であるので渡る手立てもなく、その上夜がほのぼのと明け渡り、いかがせんと身をもみ焦らした。
「これほどまで武運に尽きたか」と浜辺にどうと身を投げて正体もなく嘆いたが、やや心を取り直し、「我が身ながら不覚の嘆きなり。一まず日開野へ立ち帰り、大和様へもお話し申し上げ、鷹の敵を討つべし」と嘆きを止めて辺りを見れば、徳島行きの高瀬船が通りかかるのを、これ幸いと船に飛び乗り、難なく向こうへ飛び越えて、それより道を急ぎ日開野を目指した。
英語訳
So Kanoko understood and tucked the letter into her bosom, took leave of Kinchō, and returned home, looking back repeatedly with reluctance. Little did they know this would be their final parting in this world, as would later become clear. Now Kinchō buried the hawk's corpse in a place unknown to others, placed a marker stone, prepared himself, and came out near the ferry crossing. However, the long rains continued unabated and there was an extraordinary flood, so there was no way to cross. Moreover, night was breaking into dawn, and he fretted anxiously about what to do.
"Have I exhausted my martial fortune to this extent?" he lamented, throwing himself down on the beach and grieving beyond reason. But gradually collecting himself, he thought, "This is shameful lamentation for one such as myself. I must first return to Hibiraki Field, report to Lord Yamato, and avenge my hawk." He stopped his lamenting and looked around to see a takase boat bound for Tokushima passing by. Taking this as fortunate, he leaped onto the boat, crossed over to the other side without difficulty, and from there hastened his journey toward Hibiraki Field.
