渡しけれは並居（ならひい）る諸狸（しより）は舌を巻（ま）き
あな恐（おそ）ろしき怪力（くわいりよく）やと互（たがひ）に皃（かほ）を見（み）合
て溜息（ためいき）継（つひ）て居たりけり六右衛門は彼（か）の
状を取上 披（ひら）き見るに其 書（しよ）にいわく
急き候侭六右衛門殿へ一書を呈（ていし）候
我等此度遠路を犯（おかし）御 自（じ）分へ便り
何卒高官に登んと身をこらし
励（はげ）み務るの処今一日をして
定めの通り受（じう）官致し候て罷 帰（かへ）り
稲荷（いなり）明神と仰（あを）かれ諸人を帰服（きふく）
させんと殆（ほとんど）大悦に候所不 斗（と）公（こう）の
悪念 発（はつ）し我をして欺（だま）し
討（うた）んとは立車（りうしや）に向ふ蟷螂（とうろう）の斧（おの）
とかや是併天命なり其上
股肱（ここう）の臣鷹義作右衛門に殺され
候へば何ぞ其敵を討ざらん明日
速に手勢を率し押寄申べ

渡したところ、並み居る諸々の狸たちは舌を巻き、「ああ恐ろしい怪力よ」と互いに顔を見合わせて溜息をついていました。六右衛門はその書状を取り上げて開き見ると、その書には次のように書かれていました。
「急ぎの件につき六右衛門殿へ一書を差し上げます。我等この度遠路を犯して御自分のもとへ便りし、何とか高官に登ろうと身を粉にして励み務めたところ、今一日で定めの通り受官いたし、稲荷明神と仰がれ諸人を帰服させようと、ほとんど大いに悦んでいたところ、思いがけず公の悪念が発し、我を騙し討ちにしようとするとは、立車に向かう蟷螂の斧とでも言うべきでしょうか。これも併せて天命なり。その上、股肱の臣である鷹義作右衛門を殺されましたので、どうしてその敵を討たずにいられましょうか。明日速やかに手勢を率いて押し寄せ申すべき間、その節慌てふためくことのないよう

When she delivered it, all the tanuki sitting in rows were astonished, saying "Oh, what terrifying supernatural strength!" and sighed while looking at each other's faces. Rokūemon took up that letter and opened it to read, and in that letter it said:
"I urgently send this letter to Lord Rokūemon. We traveled this long distance to reach you, and striving with all our might to achieve high office, we were about to receive our appointment as scheduled in just one day and return home to be revered as Inari Myōjin and make all people submit to us. We were almost in great joy when unexpectedly the lord's evil thoughts arose and he plotted to deceive and attack us - this is like a mantis raising its axe against an oncoming carriage, as they say. This too is Heaven's will. Moreover, since my trusted retainer Takagi Sakuemon has been killed, how could I not avenge that enemy? Tomorrow I will quickly lead my forces and attack. At that time, make sure you do not panic and become flustered.
