しが日も早西に傾(かた)むけども鹿子は一 向(こう)
帰らず何とやらん胸さわぎせしゆへ
猶〳〵心を苦(くる)しめ思ひけるは邪智
深き六右衛門若しもや兼(かね)ての大事

を亡(ほろぼ)しはせぬかと女心の案じくらし
何にもせよ穴観音へいたり様子を
見ばやと夫より用意をし小狸
一疋を召連急いで六右衛門が栖へ至りしが

て是を見ればあに計(はか)らん我が夫鹿子
朱(あけ)になつて死(し)し居たりしゆへ大ひに
仰天し其侭 死骸(しがい)に取すかり前後
深く歎(なげ)きかなしみこわそもいか成
有様ぞ斯(こう)なる事と知るならば言ふ
まひものを悲しやと立返りては泣(なき)

夫は穴観音へ出仕しており、たった一人でいたが、日も早く西に傾いたけれども鹿子は一向に帰らず、何となく胸騒ぎがしたので、ますます心を痛め思ったことには「邪知深い六右衛門が、もしかするとかねてからの大事が露見して殺されたのか、それとも義のために身を滅ぼしたのではないか」と女心に案じ暮らし、「何にせよ穴観音へ行って様子を見よう」と、そこから用意をして小狸一匹を連れ、急いで六右衛門の住処へ到着したが、
傍らか土手の下に怪しい物があり、立ち寄ってこれを見れば、なんと思いがけないことに我が夫鹿子が血まみれになって死んでいたので、大いに仰天し、そのまま死骸に取りすがって前後も忘れて深く嘆き悲しみ「ああ、これはいったいどのような有様か。こうなることと知っていたなら止めたものを。悲しいことよ」と立ち返っては泣き、見ては泣き、気絶するばかりに嘆いたが

Her husband had gone to serve at Ana Kannon temple, and she was all alone. Though the day was already tilting toward the west, Kanoko had not returned at all. Feeling somehow uneasy in her heart, she worried even more and thought: "That cunning Rokuzaemon - perhaps our long-held secret has been exposed and my husband killed, or maybe he has destroyed himself for the sake of righteousness." With a woman's anxious heart, she spent her days in worry, thinking "Whatever the case, I must go to Ana Kannon and see what has happened." So she made preparations and, taking along one small tanuki, hurried to Rokuzaemon's dwelling.
When she arrived, there was something strange by the side or beneath the embankment. Going closer to look, she discovered - who could have imagined it! - her own husband Kanoko lying dead, covered in blood. She was utterly shocked and immediately clung to the corpse, forgetting all else as she grieved and lamented deeply: "Oh, what manner of tragedy is this? Had I known it would come to this, I would have spoken against it. How sorrowful!" She wept when she stood up, wept when she looked down, lamenting so intensely she nearly fainted, but...
