現代語訳
日向半切の包み紙が言うには：
「さて私は江戸の真ん中の呉服店で使われ、いやはや一日中客との応対でのぼせきってしまいます。そして今使われるかと待っていても、さてさて、買う客も売る者も長いと言っては飽き果てます。まあ何かそろばんをぱちぱちと音ばかりさせて『えいやら、やっと、もうこれでよろしゅうございますか』と言って、それから私を取り上げて何を書くやら、髭題目を見るように無性に跳ね散らかし、外から見ては一つも読めませんよう、やっと殴り書きし終い、『半取り』という声がすると金と一緒に」

「経験のような箱の中へぶち込み奥へ持って行くと、さあそれからがまた長いというのは一時もかかりよう、入金とその残りの紙で、自分の馴染みの呼び出し茶屋へやる文を書くところが、かの髭題目を書きつけた手癖で、きょうことばの文体を嫌らしく書くこったから、一つもろくにはできぬゆえ、引き裂いては丸め、また書いては引き裂き、その破き捨てられた私がこうしてここへ来ましたやら」

The wrapping paper of Hyuga hansetsu says:
"Well, I was used at a textile shop in the center of Edo, and oh my, I get completely flustered with customer service all day long. Even when waiting to be used, both buyers and sellers get fed up saying it takes too long. Well, they just make clicking sounds with the abacus, saying 'Alright, finally, is this acceptable now?' Then they pick me up to write something, scribbling frantically like writing a bearded daimoku, so illegibly that you can't read a single character from the outside. When they finally finish their scrawled writing and someone calls out 'Half-price!', along with the money..."

"...thrown into a box like luggage and taken to the back. Then what takes even longer - about an hour - is when they use the remaining paper to write a letter to their familiar call-girl teahouse. But since they write with the same crude hand that scrawled that bearded daimoku, trying to write refined language in an vulgar way, nothing comes out properly. So they tear it up and crumple it, write again and tear it up, and that's how I, the torn and discarded one, came to be here."
