現代語訳
方のお笑いの端切れずにもならないかと、諸奉書人の美濃上田の穴を、紙屑同然な新米作者の筆に任せ、一巻の草子となしました。されども買い手がなくば唐紙した物と気を痛め、紙本の反故同前、紙屑とも思し召し、永日の御笑いを願うのみです。

屑籠より塵紙が現れ出て、他の紙屑に言うよう。「我は紙の中でも格別にきれいな気紙なれども、ええい文で仕丸方の懐に住まい悪くすると、雪隠へ二つ切りとなって吊るされます。おのおのも、もはや明日は紙漉きの手へ渡る身の上、てんでんに身の上の懺悔話をなされぬか」
ここに紙屑買いの十六兵衛という者、日々紙屑を買い込んでいたが、ある夜角の内より何か形が現れたので、不思議に思い、耳をすまして聞いている。
