The (Prussian) troops, arranged in a single line of battle, fought valiantly and successfully repelled the fierce flanking fire from the enemy forces. The French cavalry was approximately equal in number to our cavalry, and thus the two sides attacked each other with neither gaining the advantage. Although the fire from our artillery was rather slow, it was far more intense than that of the French artillery. The mitrailleuse battery fired three times toward our artillery at a distance of eighteen hundred paces. However, it inflicted not a single casualty, and its gunfire was swiftly silenced by the intense barrage from our artillery.
