On the morning of August 6th, the Seventh Corps had extended its advance guard as far as "Herchenbachtal" [Herchenbach], situated one quarter of a German/French league to the northwest of Saarbrücken. The previous night, the enemy troops had withdrawn from their fortified position near the parade ground [drill ground] at Saarbrücken, leaving it vacant.
