——upon examining the wounds, each had been struck by a bullet. ○ Toward the end of the battle on this hill, the two sides closed in and engaged in hand-to-hand combat. ○ During this close-quarters fighting, rifles and bayonets, some bent and some broken, were strewn about the ground everywhere. ○ Furthermore, the French officers who had been taken prisoner [explained that this was] because, when the Prussian army attacked this hill, they had trusted to themselves that no enemy, however fierce and brave as demons, could possibly breach such a formidable position, and thus they permitted the advance [of their own troops to be drawn forward] and did not bother to mount a defense.
