I hereby submit this letter. On the 6th of August, in order to protect the railway from Strasbourg to Bitche and to defend the main road adjoining the eastern and western slopes of the Vosges Mountains, our First Corps was compelled to depart Wissembourg that evening and took up the following positions. ○ The right wing of the First Division advanced to Frœschwiller, while the left wing faced the direction of Reitwiller, and took up position in the deep forest covering that village. ○ Two companies moved out toward Neunwiller, and one company advanced in the direction of Gerolfshausen (or Geroldsau).
