「余、久しく『マクマホン』と消息を絶つ。ただ昨日、僅かの知らせを得たり。○『将軍レーグル』余に告げて曰く、『マクマホン』は敵の大軍と戦いて敗れ、列を乱さず、早くその軍を引き上げたり、と。○戦争は凡そ一時に始まれり。我が第二隊を退くる程は強く攻撃を受けず。ゆえに甚だ猛烈とも見えざりしに、六時・七時の頃に至り——〔次頁へ続く〕」

——[continued from previous page] Taking position at Saargemünd, and after a minor engagement, seized Forbach. ○ On the 7th of August, the Emperor of France transmitted the following telegram to the Empress:
"I have long been without news from MacMahon. Only yesterday did I receive a brief report. ○ General Regnault informed me, saying that MacMahon had fought against a great enemy force, was defeated, yet maintained his formation and promptly withdrew his troops. ○ The battle began at around one o'clock.
