足利の幕下に
属する近江の郡
領鏡山の大守
判官時包の家臣に
真言杢二郎という若者が
いた。この杢二郎は若気の至りで、
奥向きの
女子に心を通わせて
いたが、ある夜局口の
庭に忍び入ろうとした時、
奥御殿の締まりを預かる
者で川蔵の進という者が、杢二郎とは
夜のあやめに露知らず「やれ盗賊よ」と出会ってしまい言うので、
仕方なく捕らえ蔵の進も捕らえて、今はどうしようもなく
逃がそうとするにも、もはや重役人は言うに及ばず
主人の耳にまで入ってしまったので、仕方なく盗賊の
罪に落ちて、すでに刑場に引かれて罪を
せられることに決まってしまった。この時茨天
善という者が殿の体験を試し参らせようと、
立鳥の
役を請け受け、
夕暮れより刑
場に至り首切る
時刻を待つうち、
天にわかにかき曇りて
大雨篠を乱し、
神道雷電して
さらに物の
色も
分から

Among the retainers of
Hangan Tokikane, the great lord
of Kagamiyama in Ōmi Province,
which belongs to the Ashikaga
shogunate, there was a young man
named Shingon Mokujirou.
This Mokujirou, in his youthful folly,
had formed a romantic attachment
to a woman in the inner quarters.
One night, when he tried to sneak
into the garden at the entrance to her chambers,
Kawakura no Shin, who was in charge
of securing the inner palace,
encountered him in the darkness without knowing who he was
and cried "Hey, thief!" Since there was
no other choice, he captured both Mokujirou and Kura no Shin,
but now with no way out,
even when trying to let them escape, the matter had already
reached not only the senior retainers but
even the master's ears. Therefore, inevitably
he was condemned as a thief
and was already determined to be led
to the execution ground to be punished.
At this time, a man named Ibara Tenzen,
wishing to test his lord's character,
volunteered for the role
of executioner.
From evening he went
to the execution ground
and while waiting for the time
to cut off the head,
the sky suddenly became overcast,
heavy rain fell in torrents,
thunder and lightning struck,
and one could no longer
see the color
of anything at all.
