of conjuring tricks

the plum hedge. The haggard Jijiro opens
the paper screen of his window

talking to himself:
"That conjuring
sound from the
parlor across the way
is the pleasant melody
of those who gather
around their pillows
in life's pleasures.
But I am different—
lying on a bed
of endless illness.
Even that nightingale
knows the proper time
and raises its voice,
while this old man
can barely move
as he pleases—
a molting bird.
The parrot
