盗賊の難を恐れたためであった。しかるに今盗まれたのは我が落ち度だと言いながら、落ちていた時次郎の手紙を見て、「さてはあの娘が隠し男の仕業であるか」と思い、娘と乳母を厳しく問い詰めた。包み隠すこともできず、ありのままに事情を話すと、水月は大いに怒り、「憎い老人の策略め」と向かいの貸座敷に行き、鏡を取り戻そうと金井の下男を連れて向かいの家へ行った。
時次郎の方では今夜忍んで会う約束であったが、夕方からの大雪にひどく当たって苦しく、鼻血が出るほどなので、下郎の染五郎は医者の方へ行って留守である。その後で時次郎一人が病気に苦しんでいるところへ、松屋水月の家の下男どもが思い思いに六尺棒を携え、「やれ盗人よ、打ち据えて縛り上げよ」と言うなり襲いかかった。
病み疲れた時次郎は身体自在ならずといえども、覚えのある手の内、弓手馬手になげつけた。この手並みに恐れて、どうして捕らえようかと、「そばに腰の物があればよういに掛かれず」などと騒ぐばかりであった。
この時、里奉行の夜回りの役人が通りかかり、盗人と騒ぐ声に十手取縄を携えて内に踏み込み、捕らえたという。時次郎は役人と見るより手向かいもせず、神妙に戒めを受けた。
この時、松屋水月は役人の前にひざまずき、事の次第を詳しく言上した。役人は縄付きの時次郎に尋ねると、今夜は雪に当たり、病気に苦しんで、忍んで会う約束は等閑にしたことなどを物語る内、下郎の染五郎が医者の方から薬を取って戻り、この様子を見て驚き、いささかも偽る所もなく今夜の病気を語った。

Unable to conceal anything further, they told the whole truth. Suigetsu became greatly enraged, saying "That hateful old man's scheme!" and went to the rental room across the way, bringing Kanai's servant to retrieve the mirror from the house opposite.
At Tokijirō's place, though there had been a promise to meet secretly tonight, he had been badly affected by the heavy snow since evening and was suffering, even having nosebleeds. His servant Somegorō had gone to the doctor's and was away. Afterward, while Tokijirō alone was suffering from illness, servants from Matsuya Suigetsu's house came, each carrying six-foot staffs, shouting "You thief! Strike him down and tie him up!" and immediately attacked.
Though the sick and exhausted Tokijirō's body was not functioning properly, with his practiced skills, he threw them left and right with both hands. Frightened by this prowess, wondering how they could capture him, they merely made a commotion, saying things like "If he has a sword at his side, we cannot easily approach him."
At this moment, an official from the district magistrate's night patrol happened to pass by, and hearing the shouting about a thief, entered with his jutte and rope to make an arrest. When Tokijirō saw the official, he offered no resistance and meekly submitted to being bound.
At this time, Matsuya Suigetsu knelt before the official and gave a detailed account of the circumstances. When the official questioned the bound Tokijirō, he explained how tonight he had been affected by the snow, was suffering from illness, and had neglected his secret meeting promise. While he was speaking, his servant Somegorō returned from the doctor's with medicine, saw this situation with surprise, and without any falsehood, told of tonight's illness.
