馬蓼（バレウ）《イヌタデ》《本草綱目》
毒がある。春に田野や溝の傍に生育する。品種が多い。辛味がなく食用には適さないものである。ここに挙げるものは高さが三、四尺（約90～120cm）に及び、葉は肥大で葉の表面に黒い斑点があり、秋になると細かく小さな白い花を開いて穂をなし、花後に細かい種子を結び、冬に苗が枯れる。

毒がある。暖かい地方の海浜に生育する。葉は牡丹の葉に似て肌が滑らかで、葉の表面に白い粉を帯びている。夏になると高さが三、四尺（約90～120cm）に及び、梢の先端ごとに白い花を開き、密集して咲く。当帰や川芎の花のようである。花後に実を結ぶ。

It has toxicity. In spring it grows beside fields and ditches. There are many varieties. It lacks pungent flavor and is not suitable for food consumption. The one described here reaches a height of three to four shaku (about 90-120cm), has enlarged leaves with black spots on the leaf surface, opens small fine white flowers forming spikes in autumn, produces fine seeds after flowering, and the shoots wither in winter.

Bōki (Coastal Glehnia) 《Botanbaōfū》《Compendium of Materia Medica》
It has toxicity. It grows on seashores in warm regions. The leaves resemble peony leaves with smooth texture, and the leaf surface has a whitish powder coating. In summer it reaches a height of three to four shaku (about 90-120cm), opening white flowers at each branch tip in dense clusters. It resembles the flowers of dong quai (Angelica sinensis) or chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong). It produces fruit after flowering.
