し終日人に交はる毎に其人の吉凶みな耳にひゞきて
いとかしましと申けるよし去ほどに度々の高名挙て
かぞへかたし此四方市朝夙に起て僕を呼ひ扨々
あしき調子なり此調子にては大方京中は滅却すべき

『槐記』享保九年の御話に言うには、昔四方市という盲人は名高い調子聞（音を聞いて占う者）で、人の吉凶や悔い楽しみを占うのに少しも違うことがなかった。応山へは気安く毎々参って御前に伺候していたが、晩年になって申したことには「つまらないことを覚えてしまい甚だ悔やんでいる。終日人と交わるたびに、その人の吉凶がみな耳に響いて、とても煩わしい」と申したということである。それほどに度々の高名は挙げて数え難い。この四方市が朝早く起きて僕を呼び、「さてさて悪い調子である。この調子では大方京中は滅亡してしまうだろう」

According to the "Kaiki" (Sophora Records) from the 9th year of Kyōhō, there was once a blind man named Shikata-ichi who was a renowned "chōshi-giki" (one who divines by listening to sounds). When he predicted people's fortunes and misfortunes, joys and sorrows, he was never wrong. He would visit Ōzan frequently and serve in attendance, but in his later years he said, "I have learned useless things and deeply regret it. Every day when I interact with people, all their fortunes and misfortunes echo in my ears, and it is very troublesome." His numerous achievements were indeed countless. This Shikata-ichi rose early one morning, called his servant, and said, "What a terrible sound this is. With this sound, most of the capital will surely be destroyed."
