ぞ急ぎ食にても認めて我を先嵯峨の方へ誘ひゆけ
と云日頃のて手ぎはどもあれは早速西をさして嵯峨に行
嵐山の麓大井源原に着て暫く休息して云やういまだ調
子なほらずあないぶかし大方大火事成べしと人家有所
をはなれて北へ越せしにいまだ同し調子なるは此も悪所
と覚ゆ愛宕には知れる坊あり是に誘ひゆけといふいさ
とて又登り〳〵て其坊に着く坊主出て何とてかく早く
は登山しけるよと申せしかはしか〳〵の事有と答ふこゝはいかに
と問こゝも猶安からす少しにても高き所へ参りたしと云其所
に護摩堂あり此に行れよとありしかは此堂に入て大によろ
こび扨々安堵に住けり調子初て直りしとて唯いつまで
も此に居たき由申せしか頓て地震ゆり出し夥しき事
いふはかりなし《割書：世間に云寅｜年大地震》何とかしたりけむ彼護摩堂は架作（たなつくり）にて
頓て深谷へ崩れ落て破損し四方市も空しくなる六十余
りにても有べきか此一生の終りをして人の吉凶さへ姦きほどに
知るものゝ己か終る所をしらざるのみに非ず死場にて安堵し

ので急いで食事もそこそこに（記録を）認めて、私を先に嵯峨の方へ連れて行けと言った。日頃の手際の良さもあって、早速西を目指して嵯峨に向かった。嵐山の麓、大井川源流付近に着いて暫く休息して言うには「まだ調子が直らない。ああ不気味だ。大方大火事になるだろう」と、人家のある所を離れて北へ越えたが、まだ同じ調子なので「ここも悪い場所と思われる。愛宕には知り合いの坊がある。そこに連れて行け」と言う。そこでまた登りに登って、その坊に着く。坊主が出てきて「なぜそんなに早く登山されたのですか」と申したので、「かくかくしかじかの事情がある」と答える。「ここはどうか」と問うと「ここもまだ安心できない。少しでも高い所へ参りたい」と言う。その所に護摩堂があり、「ここに行きなさい」とあったので、この堂に入って大いに喜び「さてさて安心して住める。調子が初めて直った」と言って、ただいつまでもここに居たいと申していたが、やがて地震が揺り始め、おびただしいことは言うばかりもない（世間に言う寅年大地震のこと）。どうしたことであったろうか、かの護摩堂は棚造りで、やがて深い谷へ崩れ落ちて破損し、四方市も空しくなった。六十余歳でもあっただろうか。この一生の終わりまで、人の吉凶までもうるさいほどに知る者でありながら、自分が終わる所を知らないだけではなく、死に場所で安堵してしまった。

So he hurriedly finished his meal, wrote down (his observations), and said "Take me first toward Saga." With his usual efficiency, they immediately headed west toward Saga. They arrived at the foot of Arashiyama, near the source of the Ōi River, rested briefly, and he said, "The sound still hasn't improved. How ominous! There will likely be a great fire." They left the populated areas and headed north, but since the same sound continued, he said, "This place also seems bad. There is a temple I know on Mount Atago. Take me there." So they climbed and climbed until they reached that temple. A monk came out and asked, "Why have you climbed the mountain so early?" to which he replied, "Such and such circumstances have occurred." When asked "How is this place?" he said, "This place is still not safe. I want to go to an even higher place." There was a Goma Hall there, and when told "Go to this hall," he entered the hall with great joy and said, "At last I can dwell in peace. The sound has finally been corrected," expressing his desire to stay there forever. However, soon earthquakes began shaking violently beyond description (referring to what people call the great earthquake of the Tiger Year). What could have happened? That Goma Hall was built as a suspended structure, and it soon collapsed and fell into the deep valley, becoming damaged, and Shikata-ichi also perished. He was probably over sixty years old. Until the end of his life, though he was one who knew people's fortunes and misfortunes to an annoying degree, he not only failed to know where his own end would come, but found peace in his place of death.
