破れ障子から紙の離れした椽を柱とすれ
共結ひ付くへき縄たになけれは手拭なんと
引さきて是を結ひ襖障子を囲にし
屋根の用意は更になく命をまとに
持ち出せし一品二品の家財をは小屋の中の
せまけれはとてかたはらに積重ねこのうへ
如何なる変化のあるにもせよ飯の用意は
鳥用【急用？】なれとて小屋の外面に穴を掘り是に
漸く釜を懸け米さへろく〳〵洗ひも
せす火を焚つけて其儘と倒れてねむる

千辛万苦疲るゝ事社ことわりなれ
取分歎の多かりけるはことし纔に
九っなる乾三は出店梅笑堂にありし
時昼の遊ひにうち草臥れかへる
繁花の賑はしきもねむたきまゝにわか
家に帰らん事を頻りに言けるを店を
取かたつける其ひまは待て居よと里【？】
徐くにたまして爰に置【過？】けれとも素より
年も行かされは戸棚に寄添居ねむり
しを間もなく掛る大変にて気根を痛

現代語訳

破れ障子から紙の剥がれた垂木を柱として、それらを結び付けるべき縄もないので、手拭いなどを引き裂いてこれで結び、襖や障子を囲いとした。屋根の用意は全くなく、命がけで持ち出した一品二品の家財は、小屋の中が狭いので、とりあえず傍らに積み重ねた。この上どのような変化があるにしても、食事の用意は急用なので、小屋の外側に穴を掘り、そこにようやく釜を掛け、米さえろくに洗いもせず火を焚きつけて、そのまま倒れるように眠った。

千辛万苦で疲れ果てるのは当然のことである。取り分け嘆きが多かったのは、今年ようやく九歳になる乾三は、出店の梅笑堂にいた時、昼間の遊びに疲れて帰り、繁華街の賑わいも眠たいままに、我が家に帰ろうということを頻りに言ったのを、店を片付けるその間は待っていなさいと、ゆっくりとなだめてここに置いておいたが、もともと年も幼いので戸棚に寄り添って居眠りしていたのを、間もなくこのような大変事になって、気力を痛めた。

There was no preparation for a roof at all, and the one or two household goods they had risked their lives to carry out were piled up beside the hut since the inside was too cramped. Whatever changes might occur from this point on, preparing food was urgent, so they dug a hole outside the hut, barely managed to hang a kettle there, and without even properly washing the rice, they lit a fire and collapsed into sleep.

It was only natural that they would be exhausted from countless hardships and suffering. What caused particular grief was that Kanzo, who had just turned nine this year, was at the branch store Baishodo when he grew tired from playing during the day and kept saying he wanted to go home, seeing the bustling entertainment district but feeling sleepy. They had gently told him to wait while they closed up the shop and left him there, but being so young, he had dozed off leaning against a cabinet when this great disaster struck, causing great anguish.
