頻に眠をもよほす折から軒端の
蜂巣より三つよつふたつ耳を
侵してはらへとも去らす剣を
ぬいて蠅を逐し人もかゝる時
にこそと童子とともに杖を
振て巣中をおひやかせは
あまたの蜂みたれ飛てたちまち
化して人となる其さま少き

傀儡に似たり壮士あり美女あり
智者有愚者あり或は僧あり
よくもの言ひて起居動静都て
世の中のよしあしを尽せり
あなあやしと机に肘をかけて
めかれせぬ後に只今かへり
まかりぬと石子におとろかされて
覚れは一帙を枕として

現代語訳

頻繁に眠気を催す折から、軒端の
蜂の巣から三つ四つ二つと、耳を
侵して払えども去らず、剣を
抜いて蠅を追い払った人もこのような時
にこそと、童子とともに杖を
振って巣の中を追い払えば、
数多の蜂が乱れ飛んで、たちまち
化けて人となる。その様子は小さな

傀儡に似ていた。壮士あり美女あり、
賢者あり愚者あり、或いは僧もあり、
よく物を言って起居動静すべて
世の中の良し悪しを尽くした。
ああ怪しやと机に肘をかけて
見つめていると、後に「ただいま帰り
ました」と石燕に驚かされて
目覚めれば一冊の本を枕としていた。

英語訳

As drowsiness frequently overcame me,
From the beehive at the eaves, three, four, then two bees
Invaded my ears, and though I brushed them away they would not leave. Like the person who
Drew his sword to drive away flies, thinking "now is just such a time,"
I took up a staff with the boy and
Struck at the nest to drive them away.
Then countless bees flew about in confusion and instantly
Transformed into human forms. Their appearance resembled small

Puppets. There were warriors and beautiful women,
Wise men and fools, and some monks too.
They spoke well, and in all their movements and activities
They embodied all the good and evil of the world.
"How strange!" I thought, resting my elbow on the desk,
Gazing intently, when later I was startled by Sekien saying
"I have just returned home."
When I awoke, I had been using a book as my pillow.
