『万葉集』（巻十二）の養蚕歌に「たらちねの母が飼う蚕の繭籠もり、籠もれる妹を見んよしもがな」とある。蚕について『和名抄』では「蚕（和名：かひこ）」と一訓で記している。

In the Man'yōshū (volume 12), in a poem about sericulture: "Would that I could see my beloved, secluded like silkworms in cocoons raised by my cherished mother." Regarding silkworms, the Wamyōshō records "蚕 (Japanese name: kaiko)" with one reading.
